Chiks' Children’s Homes  

 

Mary Mathew  (pictured below) is providing total care and education for some of the neediest of India’s children, at Karunanilayam, Home of Mercy, a children’s home tucked away amongst the timber, coconut, rubber, rice, spices, tea etc. that are much of what Kerala, in the south-west, is about.

Mary, trained in caring for the poorest of poor by Mother Teresa, in Calcutta, was joined by UK friend Robin Radley in the mid-1990s, in arranging to bring love and security into sad and bewildered young lives.   

 

When they originally set about establishing the Home, it was about wanting a roof over children’s heads plus “one healthy cow and one well”, as Mary had put it!  Today the Home offers more facilities on more land for many more children.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Since 1996 when the first few boys and girls were welcomed, scores of orphaned and otherwise needy children have come to know and love the place.    Many were to spend all their younger years there, and for others Karunanilayam has been a temporary sanctuary while relatives attempt to resolve family problems – so often the result of poverty. Karunanilayam provides for all a child’s needs, from education and extensive care through to building for them a future free from the misery of the poverty cycle.
